Motorola has released the kernel source code for the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus smartphones, that went on sale just a few weeks ago. That’s pretty quick for Motorola, given that these phones were only announced a little over a month ago. Since Android is open source, manufacturers are supposed to uphold open source rules and release the code it uses for its kernels. Most manufacturers do, but many are very slow at doing so. However, Motorola is one of the faster ones when it comes to releasing its source code for its kernels and other software, which is good to see.
For customers that are buying or have bought the Moto G6 or Moto G6 Plus, this isn’t going to mean much, since customers don’t usually mess around with the kernel anyways. But this means that developers are able to use the source code and create some custom kernels that the customer can flash onto their Moto G6 or Moto G6 Plus. Now, obviously that means you’d need to root it and void your warranty. But flashing a custom kernel can result in getting better battery life and sometimes better performance out of the phone. With the kernel source code, developers can also build better custom ROMs that might be more up to date than what Motorola delivers these days.
The Moto G6 is already on sale here in the US, while the Moto G6 Plus is on sale over in Europe. Both are great smartphones from Motorola, which are under $300. That’s a pretty good price for a smartphone these days, especially since it does come with the latest version of Android. It’s also a good choice for those that don’t want to spend a whole lot of money on a new smartphone.
