American Airlines will introduce a big change in the rules for domestic Basic Economy fares in September — one that could shift the balance in what major airlines will let you carry on board when you travel on their cheapest fares.
Basic Economy fares are the lowest prices available at American, United and Delta, but they come with significant restrictions. Airlines introduced these fares two years ago, which were immediately derided by frequent travelers as a ploy for airlines to raise regular economy class fares. About the only time it makes sense to buy one is if you are on a short flight with little or no luggage.
American’s current rules for domestic Basic Economy tickets (and for flights to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean) allow purchasers to bring nothing more than one personal item on board – i.e., one that fits beneath the seat, like a pack, briefcase or purse. The fare does not include a carry-on bag that goes in the overhead bin or a checked bag, unless the passenger pays a fee.
The rules do allow one carry-on and one personal item for Basic Economy customers who are AAdvantage elite members or holders of American credit cards.
But American said that effective September 5, domestic Basic Economy fares will permit one personal item and one carry-on bag for all purchasers. That brings the policy into line with Delta’s domestic Basic Economy fare rules, and also with the policy for international Basic Economy fares. A checked bag will still incur a fee, however.
