Amazon announced it is expanding its renewable energy projects, which includes a solar farm in Mississippi.
Scott County will serve as the location for one of the company’s first solar projects. Similar endeavors are in the works in Arkansas and Pennsylvania. The Mississippi solar farm is expected to go online in 2024, according to a news release.
Amazon officials said Wednesday that with the addition of 14 new renewable energy projects in the U.S. Canada, Finland and Spain, the company becomes the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the U.S. Amazon has a goal to power 100% of the company’s activities with renewable energy by 2025.
The new projects bring Amazon’s total renewable energy investments to date to 10 gigawatts of electricity production capacity—enough to power 2.5 million U.S. homes. Amazon is now the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the U.S. and the world, according to the release.
Amazon will now have a total of 232 renewable energy projects globally, including 85 utility-scale wind and solar projects and 147 solar rooftops on facilities and stores worldwide.
Amazon’s third Mississippi fulfillment center is set to open this year near Canton, creating at least 1,000 new jobs.
