With record-high inflation across the U.S., it can feel like everything is more expensive. However, there are some ways you can save at home; starting with your energy bills.
Teresa Hall with Appalachian Power has some tips.
She said one of the easiest and most effective ways to save energy is to keep your windows covered during the day. She said doing this could save you anywhere from 10 to 25% on your cooling costs.
She also said to keep your thermostat consistent. She said the U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat at 78 degrees during the summer to save energy.
Another piece of advice she has is to make sure the weather stripping around your windows and doors is in good shape.
She added that running heat-producing appliances like dryers and ovens in the evening can help.
Her main piece of advice is to be mindful.
“To make sure that when you’re going through your day, you’re thinking about ways that you can save energy, you know, whether it’s running those dryers, running your appliances late, late in the evening, or keeping the blinds drawn during the day. It’s just really about being mindful, watching your bill, thinking about what you are doing,” Hall said.
Hall also said to consider signing up for their average monthly payment plan.
She said it helps you avoid those summer and winter spikes in your bill by spreading the cost of heating and cooling over the entire year.
