At IFA, HMD announced one of their most versatile devices yet—HMD Fusion. However, the excitement was dampened by hardware that isn’t particularly attractive, making the device more affordable than aspirational. The standout feature of Fusion is its pogo smart pins, which support smart covers, or “Smart Outfits” as HMD calls them. These Outfits add extra functionality to the device.
HMD showcased several in-house Outfit ideas and made a toolkit publicly available, inviting developers to create their own. One such example is a barcode reader developed by Coppernic. The most promising Outfit might be the game controller, but others, like the IP68 Outfit and one enabling wireless charging, are also noteworthy.
The first Outfit to hit the market is Flashy, a ring-shaped LED light that encircles the camera module. It’s designed for content creators and selfie enthusiasts, making it easier to do selfies, vlog or capture videos even in low-light conditions. Flashy can rotate, offering lighting for both the front and rear cameras.
Flashy Outfit Features:
- Name: Fusion Flashy Outfit
- Dimensions: 168mm x 79mm x 12.5mm
- Materials: 100% recycled TPU + 50% PCR
- Colors: Indigo Blue / Pink
Flashy integrates seamlessly with Fusion’s camera app, eliminating the need for bulky cases or separate charging. The app offers RGB color and brightness controls, allowing users to customize the lighting palette or create their own.
This Outfit is ideal for outdoor selfies and video content, but proper testing will reveal its full potential. Using Flashy is straightforward—just snap it onto the device, and it’s ready to go.
The Flashy Outfit is expected to retail for $79.99, approximately €75 or ₹6,751.19.
